Gate City Roller Derby

So this weekend I witnessed my first ever roller derby, and I have to say I was impressed. Things got off to an interesting start for me. As I left WUAG, I drove down I-85 South towards High Point. The drive was strange as I was on some "official" WUAG business and I drove past the exit for every other job I've ever had. It was like driving in the car with your girlfriend and passing the house of your three former girlfriends.

I ate at Pizza Inn for the first time since I was like nine. I remember that place being a lot cleaner in the past.
Outside view of Skate South in High Point. This is where the derby was held.

The crowd gathered early in anticipation of the first ever Greensboro Roller Derby

DJ Bonzani. Anybody know who's the man behind the mask?

A shot of the 400 plus crowd that gathered for the event.

These action shots aren't great, as I'm new to this photography thing. Plus the lighting in the place was terrible.

I'll be honest, I have no clue what they were doing here.....seems cool though

Team photo at the end of the match. Final score was 155-149. I gotta tell ya, points were scored so fast I had no Idea what was going on. I will say that Roller Derby is as an intense of a sports as anything out there, and though this was my first experience, it certainly wont be my last. If I had one complaint, it was that I was under the impression that there was going to be beer there. Most sporting events sell alcohol, but everything else was done so well I'll let it slide. Overall, it was extremly orginized, and you would have never known it was the first ever bout if not for the PA guys announcing it a thousand times. Everyone should go to the next one, I'm feeling a big WUAG field trip!
I know I said I would post after each show, and I plan to, but we had no guest in the studio, so there isn't a lot to report. Still a big thanks Miss Coors Light (Rachel Ruepurt) a Greensboro native and new face of NASCAR, for her awesome phone interview. Things are up in the air for next week, but I'll post something when we find out.

  1. Normally there would be alcohol sold at a bout but being our first we didn't really have the resources to pull that off. Sorry. I'm glad you like it and thanks for finding me afterward to say "Hello."
