This is the time of year when baseball season gets interesting. It is also a time that is no fun for really sucky teams because all of their favorite players get traded away. Not that I have any sources telling me things, but I watch ESPN, and usually remember what they say, so I will try to pass some trade scenarios on to you people. First of all, there's Prince Fielder. with The Brewers 8.5 games out of first in NL Central, I'd be surprised if they were to overtake the Cardinals and Reds. Not that it hasn't been done, but they don't play consistent enough to really be a threat. I remember reading somewhere once that The Yankees were interested in him, and that seems likely since The Yankees are interested in every superstar in the game. At 62-35 it seems weird to talk about boosting their lineup, but the Yanks could actually use a good DH. Neither Juan Miranda nor Nick Johnson have been particularly productive from the DH this season. They have combined for a whopping 5 home runs this year (Princess Fielder has 24 to give you a reference point.) The Brewers said they will wait until Saturday to make a decision, probably to see if they can gain some ground on The Reds. There will probably be teams like The Angels who are trying to make a late season playoff push who may interested as well. I don't know who teams would be willing to trade, but I do think The Brewers should hold out for some really good prospects. What I do know is that if The Yankees do get Prince, it will be no fun for the rest of the American league or any other team that crosses their path. Aline up consisting of Prince, A-Rod, Jeter and big Tex is enought to give Cy Young himself nightmares. Prince will be a free agent at the end of the season, so if teams are wanting to trade for him, they need to have a plan to sing to some sort of contract.
The other trade that may happen is Roy Oswalt for Jayson Werth. The Phillies would be stupid to do this, The Astros would be stupid not to. But if The Phils do decide they need Oswalt's arm, they should maybe look into trading for someone like Jose Bautista who is having an uncharacteristically good season, and his value wont increase enough to justify not trading for him if the deal can be made. Baseball writers believe the smartest thing for The Phillies to do would be to trade some of their prospects for Oswalt, and just deal with the enormous salaries of Oswalt and Werth, . Both players by the way will be free agents when the season is over. If The Astros fall for this, I will personally fly to Houston and slap the guys running the show. I understand that teams who suck want to get rid of the stars who will be free agents at the end of the year so they can get some people in return, but they shoul hold out for a really good trade.
And if you have not already heard, The Angels traded Joe Saunders for Dan Haren, formerly of The D-backs. So if you have not noticed the trend here, good players who play for bad teams AND who will be free agents soon, usually get traded. Just wtach it will happen. For The Sports Cycle tonight we will talk about "curses in sports". Should be pretty fun.
