Just Stuff

So Auburn won the BCS title game 22-19, and yet again another SEC school is the champion. I have nothing to say about that game that hasn't already been said so.....yeah. However, we will pick back up with our show this Monday at 5pm. We plan on sort of recapping 2010 and poking fun at the expense of Brett Favre and Rex Ryan. Also WUAG will be broadcasting 4 more UNCG basketball games, 2 men's and 2 women's. They are listed below. Finally, come to the WUAG presents tonight at Artistika. The featured bands are Bit Brigade as Ninjaband and Antigravity Animated. Artistika is at 523 S.Elm Street, and doors open at 9pm. If you have an early class tomorrow, dont worry, I'll write your professor a note...it will be fine.

Duking it out in GSO: Coach K gets win # 880

Above you see a very intimidating photo of Mike Krzyzewski. If you happened to be at the Greensboro coliseum tonight you saw a very intimidating performance by his Duke Blue Devils.If not for Coach K going for win 880 and subsequently passing his long time nemesis Dean Smith, the game would have been of very little interest to the sports world. As promised I have a quick recap since this information clearly isn't available on the Internet or ESPN...right? Sitting directly behind Duke's bench gave me one of the best seats in the house as the Blue Devils destroyed the "home team" Spartans. I say "home team" because I can't be entirely sure but going by the masses of blue shirts and by the sound of the crowd it seemed like the general support was on Duke's side. The Blue Devils immediately jumped out to a 8-0 lead within the first 2 minutes. Trevis Simpson of UNCG gave the Spartans their first points of the game just over 2 minutes into the game, ensuring that they at least would not be shut out. It was as close as the Spartans got all night as they went into the half trailing 53-32.


The second half did not get any easier for the Spartans and really, who expected it to? Duke's Kyle Singler and Nolan Smith dominated as they scored 27 and 26 points respectively as they cruised to a 108-62 win. The big story though was Coach K notching his his 880th career win surpassing Dean Smith, formerly of North Carolina, in wins and becoming the second winningest coach in college basketball (Bobby Knight is first.)Whether you love or hate Duke, you have to respect Coach K and the quality teams he coaches each season.UNCG on the other hand falls to a dismal 0-12 for the year, hopefully some good will come out of conference play. As far as WUAG related stuff, we still have some basketball broadcast left, and the next episode (first of 2011) on January 10th, and I probably will not post again until then. So everyone have a great New Year and if you get too drunk just don't puke on any one's nice furniture. See everyone next year!

How LeBron Stole Christmas

Christmas day. A day many count their blessings, enjoy the company of friends and family, eat good food, and exchange and receive gifts. Of course I did that to a degree, but instead of letting the spirit of Christmas lighten my usually cold, cynical heart I watched the Lakers-Heat game hoping that by some Christmas miracle both teams would lose (perhaps my heart is two sizes too small.) Oddly enough that did not happen.


Going into the game many people, myself included felt like the Lakers would take the game easily. With no real presence in the paint the Heat might have had a difficult time matching up up with the likes of Pau Gasol and Andrew Bynum. We were all wrong. Bynum did not start, as he has been battling injuries and Gasol was held to a rather modest 17 points. The Heat wasted no time crushing L.A's hopes by leading 20-14 after the first quarter. The second quarter went much better for the Lakers but they were still unable to cut into their deficit and went into the half trailing 47-38.




The real story, as it usually is these days, was LeBron . King James managed a triple double as he totaled 27 points, 10 assists and 11 rebounds, as for the second Christmas in a row he helped rout the the Lakers in a 96-80 contest. Say what you will about the Heat and the "Big 3" but they are certainly a force of nature. After a 96-80 win the Heat are now 23-9 and find themselves 2 game out of first in the east (the Celtics are in first.) The Lakers still boast an impressive record of 21-9 but playing in a bit of a stronger Western conference
are 4.5 games back from the always daunting Spurs who have an NBA best 25-4 record.


So there it is as promised. For a game that generated a lot of hype, it was actually kind of disappointing. The pessimistic, envious Bobcats fan in me watches a game like this looking for things to disapprove of, but the basketball fan in me sees LeBron versus Kobe as a real treat (even if Kobe had a modest game.) I hope everyone had a great Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanza and/or time off. Remember WUAG will be broadcasting the Duke/UNCG game on the 29th at 7pm. We also plan on having a recap here as well, but to be honest I nearly forgot I promised to do this one today. I'm sure everyone would have just been devastated if I had.

The Holidays are Here!

Remember when I said I would post after each show? Well I tricked everybody. Suckers! But seriously I think most people will agree that the Holiday season came at a perfect time. Especially those of us in college. Since Matt, Ryan and I will all have conflicting schedules over Christmas, the show will not resume until after the new year, although it will be the same time and night as usual (Mondays from 5-7pm by the way.) Typically I only make posts after shows featuring guests, but we will have a few things here over the break. First of all, WUAG will be broadcasting select UNCG Men's and Women's games. Those games are listed below. Also we have several games that we highlighted on the show Monday night and we will be recaping those games on this site as well. Going in order those games will be the Christmas day showdown between the Miami Heat and the Los Angeles Lakers. Next we will have UNCG's attempt at taking on Duke on the 29th (this game will also be on WUAG.) The Blue Devils should come in as the number 1 team in the nation. Finally we will have a recap of the BCS title game to be played by Oregon and Auburn (should be one hell of a game I might add.) That will take us into the new semester when we will be having shows on a weekly basis. I hope everyone has a great Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, Festivus, or whatever you do this time of year.Just have a great time doing it. Below are the games that will be on WUAG.

You know how you know your radio show is important? No not when you get tons of calls (that never happens to us) but when the school's Sports Information Director calls you and says "We're announcing our new soccer coach and he will be on your show immediately after the press conference." What I'm trying to say is that UNCG announced that Justin Maullin will be the head coach for the Men's soccer team in 2011. Maullin was the "interim head coach" for 2010 and did so well they wanted him back. His Spartans finished the season 12-6-4 and won a share of the SoCon regular season title. They went on to win the SoCon tournament and eventually lost in the first round of the NCAA tournament to Georgetown.

Maullin joined us this week and had plenty to say about how well his team played this year. He even shared stories from his time in South Africa (he's from Johannesburg) at the World Cup this past summer. As always we poked plenty of fun at Gus Johnson and Tim Tebow.

Ashley Schnell: Renaissance Woman

We were lucky enough to be joined by Cross Country standout, Ashely Schnell. Schnell is a junior here at UNCG, and has had a stellar season. Aside from breaking school records, she has been inducted into the Golden Chain society, which is the most prestigious honor for a UNCG athlete. Also, by all accounts, she is an awesome violin player. Along with her teammates she will be heading to the NCAA regional championships in Louisville, KY. The show went great. Ryan created a trivia game for me, Matt, and Ashley to play. I was winning until Ashley got the last question right, and Ryan gave her TWO points for it!!! Totally unfair. So Ashley has kept her successful year going with a win on the Sports Cycle and I gotta tell you, these kind of losses stick with me. Good luck to Ashley and the rest of the team as they head to Louisville.

Well hey thar! I'm making good on my promise to post after each show. Sure its two days late, but I never promised to have these things up immediately. Anyway, we were joined by UNCG soccer players Peyton Ford and Matt Strine. Peyton is a terrific goalie, and Matt is a talented senior midfielder. Overall the team is 9-5-4 and won a share of the SoCon title. On Saturday, they host Georgia Southern in the first round of the SoCon tournament. I foolishly challenged Peyton to see who could save more shots in the goal............... he mercifully declined. On a related note, the WUAG intramural soccer team was destroyed yesterday by a lot to a little. The important thing is that everyone had fun though (usually a speech that a coach gives his little league team after losing.) But for real, we still had a blast and everyone on the team is super cool.







And just so everyone knows, WUAG will be presenting a pretty killer show next week. The featured bands are Maps/Atlases, Tera Melos, and the Bronzed Chorus. It will be Thursday November 11 at 9m at Sutdio B, located right downtown at 520 S.Elm st. If you haven't been there, its right across the street from Artistika, and if you haven't been there, then what are you waiting for?
